QR codes in the classroom
Have you ever seen one of those black and white, boxes, you're supposed to scan, it feels like they may have been phased out? Each square is packed with unique information and this 1994 tech (older than our students!) is making a come back not only in augmented reality research but also in the classrooms of our students. Each box is created by an individual and with the right scanning app, from your laptop, desktop, smartphone or tablet, the code can be scanned to reveal a link to the next article we read in class, a youtube video venturing into the rain forest, or an audio clip filled with mariachi music. It can create a paperless opportunity to share information, why not go green? We can share information teacher to student privately, cite sources, or create a scavenger hunt. In our classroom students may use the QR codes to quickly look up Spanish keyboard short cuts for accents, (no more excuses we don't know how to accent our verbs properly!), access extra credit assignments without prior selection and preference, or listen to the days instructions. The possibilities are endless and only just beginning to be explored. Parent and student use of QR codes will be incorporated into my classroom throughout the year. To download a scanning app I would recommend "Scan" or "Zapper" but most any app that claims to have the ability to scan a code should suffice.
